Greater Zion Cup at Black Desert Resort

We are thrilled to have spent this week at the stunning Black Desert Resort for the Greater Zion Cup! With an extraordinary lineup of players, a gorgeous new facility, and the most breathtaking backdrop imaginable, we witnessed the PPA Tour (Professional Pickleball Association) at its absolute finest!

Question: …what’s different from watching it on TV?

Almost everything!

  1. The accessibility of the players is absolutely phenomenal! They roam freely throughout the venue, warming up, and even sit beside patrons in the VIP tent. It crystallizes the fact that they aren’t just extraordinary athletes; they are relatable human beings who share their passion right alongside us!
  2. The pace of play is incredibly fast. Hard serves, hard returns, insanely fast hands at the net, fast feet all the time. The reaction times are outrageous. They anticipate everything.
  3. Emotions are more pronounced in person. The tension of each point, each game, each match is evident. Whether a player is new, trying to establish themselves and qualify for a spot in the round of 64, or an OG Pickleballer, trying to maintain their position at the top of the heap, the tension is real.

The Winners

Aside from a few thrilling upsets, this tournament unfolded without massive surprises. The top players are at their pinnacle for a powerful reason; their consistency is nothing short of extraordinary! With fewer unforced errors, breathtaking athleticism, and shot selection that showcases their brilliance, combined with an unwavering mental toughness, it’s impossible not to marvel at their prowess. It’s clear as day who is destined to rise to the top! We witnessed some formidable contenders pouring their hearts into incredible pickleball this week; while they gave it their all, unseating the elite is no easy feat. The sheer excitement of watching them battle it out was nothing less than exhilarating! Cason Campbell, Rafael Lenhard, Elsie Hendershot, Kelly Goodnow, Maverick Messinger—we see you and honor your passion!

Black Desert Resort Rocks

The Black Desert Resort is stunning, and the views are so impressive. The variety of rock formations visible from Center Court is extraordinary. There was drama and concern about the facility’s readiness, but we had a wonderful week overall!

The VIP experience was outstanding, featuring exceptional service, delicious food, and an abundance of cold drinks and snacks. What stood out most was the shade—VIP was the only area that provided it, allowing us to enjoy the event without the harsh sun beating down on us. I have no doubt there will be even more improvements before next year. I’ve heard that Center Court will be fully covered, along with numerous shade structures and permanent bathrooms set to be ready by 2027.

I can’t wait…we’ll definitely be back! The Greater Zion Cup at Black Desert Resort made us proud to live in Utah!
